As more electric cars, hybrids and fuel-efficient vehicles populate the roadways, the transportation industry stemmed from the humble beginnings atop of four-legged animals.

Author Tom Rasmussen will highlight the evolution of the industry through his recently published book, “Mules and Trains to Automobiles.” The local historian will discuss it at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Northeast Georgia History Center, 322 Academy Street, NE, in Gainesville.

Admission is free for members and $3 for nonmembers.

Five days later, the history center will host a family day with the theme “In the Good Old Summertime: An Old-fashioned Picnic and Games.”

Family day will be from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, July 13, on the lawn at Brenau University.

Afternoon events will feature games, music and old-time political speeches. Games will include three-legged races, egg tosses, watermelon seed-spitting and a cakewalk.

Admission is free.
