The Georgia State Patrol says University of Kentucky safety and White County grad Ashely Lowery was not wearing a seat beat when he wrecked and got ejected from his car.

A patrol statement says the 20-year-old player from Cleveland, Ga., ran off the roadway and overturned several times. Lowery ended up about 100 feet from his car. The wreck happened about 4 a.m. Saturday in White County. Lowery was the only person in the 2006 Nissan Altima.

The patrol said Lowery was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. A hospital spokeswoman declined to release any information.

Family friend Doug Stutsman told the Louisville Courier-Journal that after doctors removed a breathing tube Sunday morning, Lowery was responsive and recognized family members.

Lowery started eight games for the Wildcats as a sophomore in 2012. He ranked fifth on the team with 43 tackles.
