Local golf roundup: Nix maintains City Championship lead

The second round of the 2014 Gainesville City Championship was completed on Saturday at Chattahoochee Golf Club. The second round was scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m., but the start was delayed until 1:30 p.m. due to heavy rains.

In the Championship Flight, Morgan Nix maintained a one-shot lead with a second round of 2-over-par 74. His lead is over Jackson Bishop, who charged up the leader board with the only sub-par round of the day. Bishop fired a second-round 71. Nix is at even-par 144, and Bishop is at 145 for the 36-hole total. Ricky Brown and Stuart Moore are three more shots back at 148.

The first and second flights completed round one on Saturday. John Yarger leads the first flight after an opening 75. That is good for a seven-shot lead over Scott Head, who had an 82. Third place is Jeff Sanford at 84.

In the second flight, Ed Waller has a one-shot lead on Jeff Stowe. Waller shot 84 and Stowe 85 in the first round. Tied for third place with rounds of 94 are Sam Couvillion and Rick Reed.

The final round will be at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

CHICOPEE WOODS DOGFIGHT: Tommy Calhoun, Eric Awtry and Yoshi Keichii teamed up to take first place in last week’s Wednesday dogfight at Chicopee Woods.

Jerry Horton, Dan Arthurs and Gayle Gibson came in second, and Greg Lee, Mark Black and Lou Vega came placed third.

Tom Bolton, Pat Ruiz and Terry Clegg placed fourth.

CLGA: The Chattahooochee Ladies Golf Association played a par-4 count event on Tuesday at the Chattahoochee Golf Course.

Ann Hollobaugh won low gross in the first flight, while Joyce Hosking took low net.

In the second flight, Ann McMullan won low gross, and Jackie Somerville won low net.

Closest to the pin winners were Sue Cronmiller (No. 3) and Hollobaugh (No. 17).

CMGA: Don Gardner and Bob Respess won the Chattahoochee Men’s Golf Association’s two-man team championship last week at the Chattahoochee Golf Course.

Clay Bartlett and Don Sorrell tied Gene Weschler and Tom Sexton for second place. In the Wednesday-only game, Herb Sckerl shot his age, 72, to win the first flight. Roy Bartlett was second and Denny Momper came in third.

In the second flight, A.J. Kiker finished in first place, Bob Henderson took second, and Bruce Doll was third.
Wednesday’s championship closest to the pin winners were Ben Brooks (No. 3), Jim Carroll (No. 5), Ed Pledger (No. 12) and Scott Adams (No. 17).

On Thursday, the closest to the pin winners were Stu Virgin (No. 3), Chuck Keith (No. 5), Nick Grillo (No. 12) and Don Sorrell (No. 17).

LUNA’S TUESDAY: Richard Strickland, Al Raines, Cleve Brown and Juan Luna won last week’s Luna’s Tuesday golf group’s event at Reunion Golf Course.

Gene Weschler, Tommy Lowery, Jerry Johns and Jim Cornett came in second. Third place went to the team of Stan Davidson Jr., Tom Sexton, Don Rogers and Johnny Nix.

Closest to the pin winners were Joe Roberts (No. 3), Bud Black (No. 8), Johns (No. 11), Lowery (No. 14) and Davidson (No. 16).
