Local sports briefs: Four area softball players named to North All-Star team

Four local softball players were named to the Georgia Dugout Club North All-Star Team last Friday.

Anna Bower and Hannah Stevens of North Hall, Shakeela Griffin of Gainesville and Krista Woody of White County were named to the team. North Hall’s Brittany Smith was also selected as an alternate.

The North Team will play a South, East and West Team in the Georgia Dugout Club All-State Tournament at All-Tournament Players Park in Marietta, opening against the South at 6 p.m. today. They will face the West at 9:30 a.m. and the East at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Smith shines with 17 points in college debut

Tennessee State basketball player and 2008 Times Basketball Player of the Year Parker Smith scored 17 points in his collegiate debut in a 101-75 win against Trevecca Nazarene in exhibition play on Wednesday in Nashville.

Parker, a 2008 Chestatee High graduate, was 6-for-11 in the game and 4-for-9 from the three-point line. He, along with teammate Darius Cox, led all scorers with 10 points at halftime.

Tennessee State plays host to Kentucky State at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
