This week: Softball tournaments set to start

With the regular season of high school softball in the books, region tournaments around the area will begin this week.

The Region 8-AA tournament will begin on Tuesday and continue with games on Thursday and Saturday. The tournament will feature four teams, including Jackson County and Union County, that have been ranked in the top 10 this year.

Buford, which finished 21-3 in its final 24 regular season games, will also begin its region tournament this week. Region 6-AA will also begin on Tuesday.

Region 8-AAA, featuring the top two teams in the state (Oconee County and Walnut Grove) will begin play today with North Hall taking on Lanier and West Hall taking on Monroe. Winners will play Stephens County and Lumpkin County, respectively, today after the completion of the opening games.

VOLLEYBALL: Gainesville High will play its final two matches of the season today and Tuesday at North Forsyth and in a tri-match at North Hall where Johnson will also participate.

West Hall, one of the top teams in Area 8-AAA, has finished its regular season schedule.

The area tournament will begin on Thursday at Oconee County.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: After defeating Mississippi State at home and improving to its first winning record since an opening-game win over Louisiana-LaFayette in 2010, Georgia will travel to Tennessee to face the Volunteers at Neyland Stadium on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be shown on either ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU.

Now ranked No. 13 in the AP poll, Georgia Tech (5-0, 2-0 ACC) will host Maryland at home at noon on Saturday. The game will be shown on ESPNU.

ATLANTA FALCONS: The Falcons will host the Green Bay Packers at the Georgia Dome for Sunday Night Football. Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m., and the game will be shown on NBC.

ATLANTA DREAM: The Dream will play the Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA Finals. They will play at Minnesota on Wednesday before traveling home for a game on Friday and, if necessary, Sunday.
