Prep scoreboard: Gainesville boys advance to second round

The Gainesville High boys tennis team opened the first round of the Class AAA State Tournament with a 3-2 win against Chamblee on Tuesday at Longwood Park in Gainesville.

Ryan Joiner and Andreo Belch each won singles matches in straight sets, giving the Red Elephants an early lead.

Gainesville secured the win with a three-set doubles victory from Robbie Bilbrough and Drew Denning.

Gainesville will play the winner of the Cartersville/Stephens County match in the second round of the tournament.

Westminster girls 4, North Hall 0

The Lady Trojans fell to Class AAA’s fourth-ranked Westminster in the first round of the AAA State Tournament on Tuesday in Gainesville.

The Wildcats took an early lead with singles wins over Cara Reece and Hayley Crowder. Westminster completed the sweep in doubles with wins over the No 1. doubles team of Lauren Bolton/Courtney Wiley and the No. 2 doubles team of Jessica Butts/Rachael Langman.

North Hall’s (19-2, 11-1 Region 7-AAA) season is now complete.

BASEBALL

Jefferson 15, Commerce 5

Jake Fields hit three home runs and had eight RBIs for Class A’s No. 7-ranked Dragons on Wednesday night in Commerce.

Tyler Hill homered and drove in three runs and Anthony Dowker was 2-for-5 for Jefferson (15-3, 14-0 Region 8-A).

Blaine Skaggs picked up the win for the Dragons.

Jake Flint went 2-for-4 with a home run for the Tigers (2-14, 2-11).

Jefferson plays host to Prince Avenue Christian at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Commerce visits Talullah Falls at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Lakeview Academy 10, Towns County 5

Brad Armour was 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIS for the Lions on Tuesday in Hiawassee.

Colin King homered and had three RBIs and Haughton Carswell was 2-for-4 at the plate for Lakeview (13-7, 9-3 Region 8-A). Angus Ferguson earned the win on the mound for the Lions.

Lakeview plays host to Hebron Christian at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

GOLF

Buford girls win region title

Abby Johnson shot a 75 and Christie Wilson carded a 92 to lead the Lady Wolves to a region title at the Region 6-AA championship on Tuesday at the Marietta City Club in Marietta.

Buford finished with a team score of 167. Wesleyan finished second with a 171 and Greater Atlanta Christian placed third with a 174.
