HS volleyball: Gainesville survives; other local teams bow out

Facing elimination in the third game of Tuesday's second round playoff match, Gainesville responded with three straight wins and a 21-25, 23-25, 25-13, 26-24, 15-12 win against Locust Grove in Henry County.

With the win, the Lady Red Elephants (26-12) have secured a spot in the state quarterfinals for a match on Saturday.

In Game 5, Gainesville trailed 11-5 before going on a 10-1 run to secure the win.

"Our team fought so hard and pulled off a great comeback," Gainesville coach Randi Orr said.

The Lady Red Elephants are now the only team from Area 8-AAA remaining. No. 1 seed Oconee County lost to Woodward Academy on Tuesday.

For Gainesville, Lauren Carter had five digs and Laura Beth Lorentz finished with seven blocks.

Grace Miller had 21 serve attempts for the Lady Red Elephants and Kaylin Walden finished with 33 assists. Anna Walker had 24 kills for Gainesville.

WEST HALL FALLS AT VETERANS: The Lady Spartans lost their second round match to Veterans 25-15, 25-5, 27-25 on Tuesday in Houston County. West Hall finished its season with a school-record 35 wins.

"We played hard all season," West Hall coach Joe Nelson said. "I'm very proud of these girls."

NORTH HALL FALLS TO SANDY CREEK: McKenna Rushton had five kills and four blocks for the Lady Trojans in a second round 25-13, 25-17, 25-15 loss to No. 1 Sandy Creek on Tuesday in Tyrone.

Kristina Gregory added eight assists and a pair of aces for North Hall, and Sarah Paschall finished with eight digs and four blocked shots.

North Hall's season is finished with a 25-21 record.

JEFFERSON EDGED BY HEBRON: Cassie Metcalf had nine kills, seven digs, two assists and two aces for the Lady Dragons in a 26-24, 22-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-12 loss to Hebron Christian in the second round of the Class A/AA state tournament Tuesday in Jefferson.

Amanda Daniel finished with a school-record 40 assists, five kills, three aces and three digs for Jefferson, while Taylor Cramsey had a school-record 23 kills, eight aces, four digs and a block.

Jefferson's season ended with a 32-10 record.

LADY WOLVES TOPPED BY ELCA: Maggie Roper finished with nine digs, seven kills and three aces for Buford in a second round 25-10, 25-13, 25-14 loss to Eagle's Landing Christian Academy in the Class A/AA state tournament on Tuesday in McDonough.

Jessica Falletta had three kills and 10 digs for the Lady Wolves, and Bailey Hicks had 13 assists.

Buford's season ends with a 24-14 record.
