Gainesville and West Hall advance to second round in volleyball

The West Hall volleyball team earned a win in its first match of the Class AAA state tournament on Wednesday over Grovetown (25-12, 25-16, 25-18) in Augusta.

Tonya Bennett had 11 kills, eight digs and three aces to lead the Lady Spartans. LeNiesha Kearse added 11 kills.

West Hall's Stephanie Rowland compiled eight kills, four aces and four blocks on the night, and Laykin Herford had 32 assists. Krista Walsh added eight digs.

The Lady Spartans (35-7) will play Veterans in Macon Tuesday.

BUFORD WINS FIRST-ROUND MATCH: Bailey Hicks had 22 assists, seven aces and seven digs in a winning effort on Wednesday against Brookstone (25-16, 25-14, 25-14).

The Lady Wolves Maggie Roper recorded 13 kills and 5 aces, while Mikhayla Riegel had 11 digs.

Buford (23-13) will play Eagles Landing Christian Academy on Tuesday.

RED ELEPHANTS SWEEP CROSS CREEK: Kaylin Walden recorded 23 assists and four aces as Gainesville beat the Lady Razorbacks (25-9, 25-18, 27-25) on Wednesday night in Augusta.

Anna Walker had 12 kills and Katelyn Whelchel had six kills for the Lady Red Elephants.

In the second round, Gainesville (24-12) will play the winner of Locust Grove and Arabia Mountain on Tuesday.

LADY DRAGONS SWEEP IN FIRST ROUND: Amanda Daniel recorded 21 assists, three aces, two digs and two kills as Jefferson beat Landmark Christian (25-19, 25-20, 25-13) on Wednesday at home.

Taylor Cramsey had nine kills, five aces, a block and a dig for the Lady Dragons, while Sarah Wood added six kills, four aces, two assists, a block and a dig.

Jefferson (32-9) will play the winner of Hebron Christian and Kendrick on Tuesday.

BUFORD ADVANCES TO SECOND ROUND:
The Lady Wolves swept Manchester in a best of three series 13-0 and 17-1 on Wednesday in Buford.

Tessa Daniels (13-3) struck out five batters and earned the win in the pitcher's circle during the first game.

Remington Hasty had a double and two RBIs, while Lanier Paul blasted a two-run home run. Lexi Overstreet and Jazmin Hawkins had two RBIs each.

In the second game, Bria Bush (5-4) was the winning pitcher, striking out four. Overstreet went 2 for 2 with a two-run home run, a triple and 3 RBIs.

Kodi Ricketson also had a two-run home run, knocked in two and scored two runs.

Buford (27-10) will play the winner of the Union County vs. North Murray series, who are tied at one game apiece and play an elimination game today at 6 p.m.
