High school scoreboard: North Georgia Christian girls win title

The North Georgia Christian Academy girls made history Saturday by defeating Skipstone Academy 40-25 and claiming the school’s first state championship in any sport.

Emily Owens led the Lady Chargers (16-2) with 11 points.

VICTORY CHRISTIAN 52, NORTH GEORGIA CHRISTIAN 45: While the girls captured a state title, the Chargers fell seven points shy of a state title Saturday at Columbus State University.

Zach Pendley scored 14 points and Joe Boonstra and Ashton Wright added 10 for the Chargers (22-4), who had the best record in school history and made the program’s first championship game appearance.

EAST HALL GIRLS 62, NORTH HALL 48: Morgan Jackson scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Lady Vikings past North Hall and into the state tournament Saturday in Gainesville.

Jasmine Jenkins scored 12 points for East Hall (20-5), which plays Creekview on Monday in the semifinals of the Region 7-AAA tournament. Shekayla Rucker scored 11 points for the Lady Trojans, whose season is now complete.

ATHENS CHRISTIAN BOYS 66, LAKEVIEW ACADEMY 60: The Lakeview Academy boys basketball team will start the Class A state tournament on the road thanks to a loss to Athens Christian on Saturday during the Region 8-A tournament at Towns County.

Austin Pearson scored 14 points for the Lions, who trailed 48-36 after three quarters. Daniel Olvera was the team’s second leading scorer with 11 points, while Matt Askounis chipped in with 10 points. Lakeview Academy (15-10) will play the loser of the Commerce-Social Circle game in the third-place game at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Towns County.

DAWSON COUNTY BOYS 35, EAST JACKSON 17: Stephen Scaife scored 14 points to advance the Tigers to the Class AA state tournament for the fourth straight season Saturday in Dawsonville. Dawson County, which lost to East Jackson by 25 earlier this year, will play Riverside Military at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the Region 8-AA semifinals at East Jackson.

BUFORD GIRLS 45, LOVETT 35: Andraya Carter scored a game-high 25 points to send the Lady Wolves to the Region 6-AA championship game. Buford (24-3) will play Greater Atlanta Christian for the region title at 7 p.m. Monday at GAC.

Tennis

NORTH HALL GOES 1-2 IN TOURNEY: The Trojans beat Gainesville and lost to Carrollton and Buford on Saturday at the Buford Invitational Tournament.

Clayton Nedza picked up the lone win for North Hall against Carrollton. Mitch McCray (No. 2 singles) picked up wins against Buford and Gainesville, as did the No. 2 doubles team of Jack Hortenstine and Joe Nedza.
