Lumpkin County baseball takes down No. 9 White County

The Lumpkin County baseball team scored twice in the top of the eighth inning, and Cole Walden closed out the bottom of the frame to earn the 5-3 win over ninth-ranked White County on Tuesday in Cleveland.

Walden pitched six innings in relief, striking out four, and Austin Gooch added a home run for the Indians (6-6, 5-6 Region 8-AAA). Curtis Donaldson and Will Anderson each added an RBI, and Logan Moye scored three runs for Lumpkin County, which hosts Monroe Area at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday.

Bo Medlock went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, and Kyle Mills added a solo home run for White County (10-2, 9-2), which is now in a three-way tie atop the region with No. 6 Gainesville and North Hall. David Sosebee went 2-for-4 with a double for the Warriors, who host Franklin County at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday.

GAINESVILLE 15, WALNUT GROVE 5 (FIVE INNINGS): Skyler Weber went 4-for-4 with a double, triple, three runs scored and four RBIs in the win Tuesday at Ivey-Watson Field. Stephen Mason (4-1) earned the complete-game win, striking out eight, while David Gonzalez added a three-run home run. Ryan Griffith (2-for-4) had three RBIs and two runs scored, while Jimmy Kemp went 2-for-2 with two runs scored for Gainesville (11-2, Region 9-2), which is now in a three-way tie atop Region 8-AAA with White County and North Hall. The Red Elephants host Chestatee at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday.

CHESTATEE 6, LANIER 4: Scott Chewning went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, and Alex Moore went 3-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored for Chestatee, which visits Gainesville at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday.

LAKEVIEW ACADEMY 4, TOWNS COUNTY 0: Dallas Deavers threw five innings, giving up two hits and three walks while striking out nine to earn the win Tuesday in Gainesville. Taylor Simpson earned the save while going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a double for Lakeview (5-8, 4-5 Region 8-A). Nick Drury went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a double for the Lions, who visit Tallulah Falls at 5:15 p.m. Thursday.

UNION COUNTY 12, EAST HALL 2 (FIVE INNINGS): Coleman Sullivan went 3-for-4 with a grand slam, three runs scored and five RBIs to lead the Panthers (9-5, 5-3 Region 8A-AA) on Tuesday in Gainesville. Brock Gordon (5-3) earned the win on the mound, throwing four innings with seven strikeouts. Zach Odom added a double and three runs scored on 2-for-2 hitting, while Dalton Everett and Andrew Walker each went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Union County visits Rabun County, and East Hall visits Dawson County, at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

JOHNSON 6, STEPHENS COUNTY 2: Win Griffith earned the complete-game victory with three strikeouts for Johnson (7-6, 6-5 Region 8-AAA), while Logan Pethel added two hits and two RBIs. The Knights host North Hall at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday.

FLOWERY BRANCH 8, APALACHEE 2: Chase Hulsey (2-0) earned the complete-game win with eight strikeouts Tuesday in Winder. Hulsey and Andrew Miles each homered for Flowery Branch (8-2, 4-1 Region 8A-AAAA), which hosts Winder-Barrow at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday.

BUFORD 2, LOVETT 0: Sam Clay pitched 6 1/3 innings, scattered six hits, and struck out seven to earn the win Tuesday in Buford. Mason Gentry went 2-for-2 and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the first inning to account for one of two Buford runs. James Nix drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth for No. 2 Buford (12-1, 6-0 Region 6A-AA), which visits Maynard-Jackson at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

JACKSON COUNTY 12, EAST JACKSON 2 (FIVE INNINGS): Quinn Grogan and Andy Williams each went 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead the Panthers to the win Tuesday at East Jackson. Grogan added a double and three runs scored for Jackson County, while Jalen Banks (1-2) earned the win. The Panthers (6-8, 6-5 Region 8B-AA) visit Jefferson at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday.

GAINESVILLE GIRLS 90, NORTH FORSYTH 97, LUMPKIN COUNTY 118: Madeline Harr (44) and Meg Callahan (46) earned the win Tuesday at Achasta Golf Course in Dahlonega. The Lady Red Elephants face Habersham Central at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Chattahoochee Golf Course. Haley Dibble's 58 led Lumpkin County, which faces North Hall at 3:30 p.m. today at the Chestatee Golf Course.

FLOWERY BRANCH BOYS 158, APALACHEE 185, CLARKE CENTRAL 193: Colby Stone carded a 38 and Ryan Tewksbury fired a 39 to lead the Falcons to the win Tuesday at Reunion Golf Course. Flowery Branch plays in the Madison County Invitational on Saturday.

GAINESVILLE BOYS 6, MONROE AREA 1: Yunis Yanez scored twice to lead the fourth-ranked Red Elephants (11-2, 9-0 Area 8-AAA) to the win Tuesday in Monroe. Gainesville visits North Hall at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

GAINESVILLE GIRLS 10, MONROE AREA 0: Gladys Campus recorded a hat trick, and Anna Youmans and Liza Carpenter each scored twice for Gainesville in the win Tuesday in Monroe. The Lady Red Elephants (9-4, 7-2 Area 8-AAA) visit North Hall at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
