High school scoreboard: Flowery Branch sweeps Hall County cross country meet

Kiara Woods of Flowery Branch and North Hall’s Nolan Clark each set a Chestatee course record during the Hall County High School Cross Country Championship on Tuesday at Chestatee Middle.

Woods’ time of 21 minutes and three seconds paved the way for a first-place finish by the Lady Falcons. Chestatee and North Hall finished in second and third place, respectively.

The Flowery Branch boys also finished first in the meet, and were led by Daniel Martinez, who finished in second place with a time of 17:34. Clark’s time of 17:16 paced North Hall to a second place finish. West Hall finished third.

Along with Clark and Martinez, medals were awarded to the remaining top five male finishers including: Gainesville’s Aurelio Montano (17:40), who finished third, North Hall’s Ty McCormack (17:49), Flowery Branch’s Jeffrey Velez (17:59), West Hall’s Andy Martin (18:01) and North Hall’s Cody Barger (18:01).

The top-seven female finishers also received medals. Joining Woods on the medal stand were Chestatee’s Kelsey Neukum (21:38), who finished second, Flowery Branch’s Eileen Devico (21:47), who finished third, West Hall’s Liliana Cervantes (22:45), Flowery Branch’s Utami Ketchem (22:58), Chestatee’s Cara Martin (23:10) and Flowery Branch’s Ana Lopera (23:21).

SOFTBALL

White County 6, West Forsyth 3

Stephanie Satterfield picked up her 18th win of the year by striking out five batters in White County’s 6-3 win against West Forsyth on Tuesday in Cumming.

Morgan Jackson and Kayley Dover each went 2-for-4 for the Lady Warriors (21-5, 10-2 Region 7-AAA).
White County plays host to Johnson at 5:55 p.m. Monday in the play-in game of the Region 7-AAA tournament.

East Jackson 3, Jefferson 0

The Lady Eagles scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning to defeat Jefferson on Tuesday in Jefferson.

Kaitlin Hill picked up the win for East Jackson, striking out 12 and surrendering only one hit by Devin Stanley.

This was the final game of the regular season for Jefferson (7-13, 5-3 Region 8-AA), which finished in fourth place in the region.

The first-round pairings have yet to be decided for the Region 8-AA tournament that begins Thursday at North Oconee High.

East Hall 7, Gilmer 2

Kayla McDougald struck out four batters en route to a win on Tuesday at East Hall.

The Lady Vikings were led at the plate by Kelsey Allen, who had one hit and two RBIs. Christina White and Jennifer Thompson each added a hit, an RBI and a run scored for East Hall.

The Lady Vikings will next play in the Region 7-AAA tournament that begins Monday. First-round pairings have not been determined.

VOLLEYBALL

West Hall drops two

The Lady Spartans lost to West Forsyth (25-20, 25-20) and Pickens (25-20, 25-12) on Tuesday at West Forsyth.
West Hall was led by Jessica Hollis, who had 39 digs on the night. Abigail Grindle had eight kills and nine digs, and Tonya Bennett added six kills for West Hall.

The Lady Spartans play host to Creekview and Gainesville at 5 p.m. Oct. 7.

Chestatee, Johnson earn split

The Lady War Eagles lost to Johnson (25-17, 25-21) and beat Creekview (29-27, 17-25, 25-23) on Tuesday at Johnson.

The Lady Knights lost to Creekview (18-25, 19-25).

Jessica Porter led Chestatee with 23 digs. Madisen Yates had seven kills and one block, Alura Roe had four kills and two blocks, Ali Burnette had four kills and 16 digs, and Elvira Perez added 11 digs for the Lady War Eagles.

Against Chestatee, Johnson was led by Laura Gazaway, who had 10 digs, Jordan Gustavel (six kills, nine digs) and Shelley Farley (20 assists).

Chestatee plays Pickens at 5 p.m. Thursday. Johnson plays host to West Forsyth and Gainesville at 5 p.m. Thursday.
