The East Hall volleyball team is back-to-back Region 7-AAA champions, after wins Thursday night over Lumpkin County (25-20, 25-17) and West Hall (25-21, 25-21) in Gainesville.
East Hall’s Minette Maldonado had 25 kills and 13 digs, Summer Lindsey had 19 digs and Savannah Thellman had 33 assists.
East Hall (34-13, 5-1) hosts the first round of the Class AAA state volleyball tournament Wednesday in Gainesville.
GAINESVILLE SWEEPS LOGANVILLE: The Lady Red Elephants won 25-21, 25-23 in the first round of the Region 8-AAAAA tournament Thursday night.
Gainesville’s Tanai Watson had nine kills, and Savannah Roys had 12 assists and nine digs.
Gainesville (32-11) travels to Apalachee to play Clarke Central at 9 a.m. Saturday.
JEFFERSON TAKES TWO FROM EAST JACKSON: The Lady Dragons advance to the state tournament with a 25-14, 26-24 win Thursday night.
Jefferson’s Abby Wood had eight kills and 10 digs, Olivia Przybysz had 10 digs and Madison Corbett had 16 assists.
Jefferson hosts Oconee County at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at The Arena in Jefferson.
The Buford softball team swept their doubleheader with North Oconee 6-3, 5-4 in the semifinals of the Region 8-AAAA tournament at home Thursday.
Buford senior pitcher Peyton Wolfe (12-0) got the win in relief in Game 1. She went 12/3 innings, allowing no runs, one strikeout and no walks allowed.
The Lady Wolves scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break up a 3-3 tie.
Buford senior Baylee Sexton went 3 for 4 with an RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Senior Lea Edwards went 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
Wolfe (13-0) also got the win in relief for Buford in Game 2.
Buford trailed 4-1 in the seventh inning before Sexton hit a three-run, inside-the-park home run.
Sexton went 1 for 4 with three RBIs. Drew Puckett went 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
Buford finished the game with four hits.
Buford (21-6) hosts North Hall, a winner against Madison County, in the Region 8-AAAA championship game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
FLOWERY BRANCH 5, WINDER-BARROW 2: The Lady Falcons secured the No. 3 seed in the Class AAAAA State Tournament with the win Thursday.
Lady Falcons’ Bailey Sims went 2 for 3. Freshman pitcher Alyssa Kimbrell went five innings to start, and sophomore pitcher Kara Kight got the win in relief.
Flowery Branch visits Alexander High in the best-of-three Class AAAAA opening round series Wednesday in Douglasville.
