East Hall boys defeat top-ranked team from West Virginia

Six players scored in double figures to spark the East Hall boys basketball team to a 78-64 win over Logan, W.Va. on Wednesday in the Upward Classic at Dorman High in Spartanburg, S.C.

Dre Perry and J.C. Hampton scored 15 each to lead the Vikings (7-3) to the win over Logan, which is the top-ranked team in West Virginia’s Class AAA and the defending state champion.

Kymon Woods, Brian Edwards, Sterling Bailey and Chris Orr each added 10, with Bailey pulling down 18 rebounds.

Class AA’s fourth-ranked East Hall will face Olympic High (N.C.) at 12:30 p.m. today in the final round of the tournament. 

RIVERDALE, TENN. GIRLS 42, BUFORD 38: Kaela Davis scored 13 points and Andraya Carter added nine as the Lady Wolves endured their first loss of the season Wednesday in the Peachstate Christmas tournament in Duluth.

Buford (7-1) led 23-21 at halftime, but was outscored 11-5 in the third quarter and couldn’t mount a comeback in the final period. 

Class AA’s top-ranked Lady Wolves will host Madison County at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

BUFORD BOYS 56, TIFT COUNTY 53 (TUESDAY): Kyle Kellam scored a team-high 13 points and Alex Flagler added 10 as the Wolves won in the McDonald’s Invitational on Wednesday in Tifton. Buford faces Huntsville Lee, Ala. at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Centennial High in Roswell.

DAWSON COUNTY GIRLS 71, GORDON CENTRAL 45: Morgan Bennett hit four 3-pointers in the second quarter and the Lady Tigers used a 17-point halftime advantage to cruise to the 71-45 win over Gordon Central on Wednesday in the Pickens Holiday Classic in Jasper.

Bennett finished with a team-high 16 points for Dawson County (8-3).

Morgan Huber scored 11 points, while Natalie Parker and Kristi Hyams each added eight.

Allie Costley had a team-high six rebounds and added three points for the Lady Tigers, who play Darlington at noon on Thursday in the next round of the tournament.

JOHNSON GIRLS 43, LAKEVIEW ACADEMY 19: Caitlin Sloan scored 21 points and eight rebounds to lead the Lady Knights to the win Wednesday at Lakeview.

Molly Gay scored seven points to lead the Lady Lions, who led 5-4 at the end of the first quarter, but only managed two points in the second quarter and 12 points in the second half.

HILLGROVE GIRLS 64, CHESTATEE 39: Peyton Robertson had 19 points and five rebounds and Melissa Bailey added seven points and five rebounds in the losing effort Wednesday in the Allatoona Christmas Classic in Acworth.

The Lady War Eagles (9-2) play at 4 p.m. on Thursday in the Lake City Classic.

NORTH COBB BOYS 51, FLOWERY BRANCH 29: James Hodges led the Falcons with eight points in the Jared Cook Classic on Wednesday at North Gwinnett High in Suwannee. Flowery Branch will face Winder-Barrrow for seventh place at 10:35 a.m. on Thursday in Suwanee.

CHATTAHOOCHEE BOYS 72, NORTH HALL 65: Chris Barnes led North Hall with 17 points and Ethan Smith added 14 in the Chattahoochee Christmas tournament on Wednesday in Alpharetta. Imani Cross added 11 points for the Trojans (7-4), which face West Hall at 7:30 on Thursday in Oakwood.
