Buford swept South Effingham 15-2 and 2-1, in the second round of the Class AAAAA state softball playoffs, earning a spot in the state tournament starting Oct. 27 in Columbus. The Lady Wolves will play Starr’s Mill at 2 p.m. on Oct. 27.
Buford’s Samantha Thomas had a solo home run with two RBIs for the Lady Wolves in the first game. Also for Buford, Mariah Wicker was 2 for 2 with four RBIs, and scored once. Katie Perkins finished with three RBIs and scored twice for Buford. Arielle Oda finished with two RBIs and scored twice for the Lady Wolves.
From the circle, Logan Caymol pitched six strikeouts.
Buford’s Kelsey Bennett scored the winning home run in the second game, coming back from her arm injury earlier in the season in August. Hannah Jo Hyatt finished the night with an RBI while Oda finished with a scored run and stole base for the Lady Wolves.
This is Buford’s 12th consecutive trip to the championship weekend, and 13th time in the programs’ 15 years.
WARE COUNTY SWEEPS FLOWERY BRANCH: Flowery Branch’s season ended in Waycross against Ware County in the second round of the Class AAAAA playoffs. The Lady Falcons were swept by Ware County, losing 2-1 and 15-0.
Lakeview’s Wright Allen finished in second place with a time of 18 minutes, 32 second, helping the Lions to first place in Tuesday’s Harrier Harvest meet at Tallulah Falls. Lakeview Academy had five of their runners finish in the top 10, T.O.
Sosbee in fourth place with a time of 19:09, Dhruv Gaur in fifth place with a time of 19:14, Hayes Kennedy finished in sixth place with a time of 19:22 and Mani Reddy in seventh place with a time of 19:36.
Jackie Allen ran a time of 24:49 finishing in 11th place helping the Lady Lions to fourth place.
Lakeview will compete in the Region 8-A meet on Oct. 27 at Athens Academy.
