Samantha Thomas hit a walk-off, two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to lift top-ranked Buford past Effingham County 4-3 in extra innings Friday at Lanier High in the Rumble in the Ridge tournament.

Kennedy Kotula was the starting pitcher and allowed five hits in seven innings. Chandler Wright got the win in relief.
Buford (2-0) travels to Peachtree Ridge to play Evans and North Gwinnett starting at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Preseason Football

The defense forced four turnovers but that wasn’t enough as Riverside Military Academy fell to Stone Mountain High 19-6 in a preseason scrimmage Friday at Maginnis Field.

David Cannon rushed for 72 yards in a losing effort. Quarterback Sean Allison went 10 for 13 for 90 yards, and Kobe Spicer had two receptions for 40 yards.

Riverside Military travels to Meadowcreek for their second scrimmage at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
