High school roundup: Buford football cruises in Texas Gridiron Classic

The Buford High football team, ranked No. 1 in Class AA, jumped to a 28-7 lead in the second quarter and cruised to a 42-21 win against Mansfield-Timberview High (Texas) Saturday in the Texas Gridiron Classic at Texas Stadium in Dallas. Storm Johnson, a junior, had touchdown runs of 74, 15 and 2 yards for the defending Class AA state champion Wolves.

Cody Getz, a senior, added touchdown runs of 4 and 5 yards, and returned a punt 38 yards for a touchdown. Buford senior quarterback Michael May finished 6 of 7 passing for 54 yards.

Josh Rudnik led the Wolves receiving with three catches for 25 yards.

Buford’s defense held Mansfield-Timberview tailback and Minnesota verbal commitment Eric Stephens— ranked the sixth best all-purpose running back in the country by Rivals.com— to only 52 yards rushing.

Buford plays host to North Hall at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Tom Riden Stadium in Buford.

Flowery Branch cross country wins 

The Flowery Branch High boys and girls cross country teams both won their races at the Northeast Georgia Championships Saturday at Athens Christian. Kiara Woods led the Lady Falcons with a fourth place finish.

For the boys, Daniel Martinez placed third (17:12), David Farist finished ninth (17:40) and Maurice Riden was 10th overall (17:42). Flowery Branch (46 points) finished ahead of second place Oconee County (96).

Drew Garland (18:46) and Buddy Foster (19:16) led the Flowery Branch junior varsity boys to a win in its race.

Regional events
