High school cross country: Dawson County's Poston runs 15:33 to win 7-AAA title at Unicoi

Jacob Poston led Dawson County’s boys to a team Region 7-AAA cross country title with a time of 15 minutes, 33 seconds on Thursday at Unicoi State Park in Helen.

Dawson County, North Hall, Greater Atlanta Christian and Union County all advanced boys squads from the region meet and will move on to the state run in Carrollton on Nov. 4-5.

North Hall’s Tommy Johnston (16:01) and Devan Crow (16:15) finished second and third behind Poston’s top finish.

Dawson County’s Christopher Shelp (16:55), Union County’s Lance Underwood (16:58) and Dawson County’s Cody Wood (17:07) rounded out the top six.

DAWSON COUNTY, NORTH HALL GIRLS ADVANCE TO STATE FROM REGION 7-AAA: Dawson County’s girls took the top spot in the Region 7-AAA cross country meet on Thursday at Unicoi State Park in Helen. North Hall followed in second with Union County and Greater Atlanta Christian finishing out the top four squads. The four teams will travel to Carrollton on Nov. 4-5 for the state meet.

Dawson County’s Frankie Muldoon (19:27) and Marley Hamby finished first and second. Muldoon crossed the finish line 35 seconds ahead of her teammate. Greater Atlanta had the third-place runner, while Mattie Bohanan (20:35) of North Hall took fourth. GAC and Union County had the fifth and sixth placers.

REGION 8-AAAAA MEET: Ethan Hargrove finished in fourth place leading Flowery Branch to a Region 8-AAAAA title with a time of 16:36.

Flowery Branch, Clarke Central (second place), Loganville (third place), and Johnson (fourth place) will all run for state in Carrollton on Nov. 4-5.

Johnson’s Issac Hernandez finished in first place (16:04). Loganville’s Austin Walden finished in second place (16:26), Clarke Central’s William White placed third (16:28) and Luis Alvarado took fifth place for Johnson (17:14). Marc Grindy finished in sixth place for the Falcons.

In the girls race, Erika Plummer led the Lady Falcons to first place with a time of 18:47 as she placed first overall with a 1:06 gap ahead of her teammate Shannon Hoolahan who finished in second place (19:53.1).

Flowery Branch, Johnson (second place), Buford (third place), and Loganville (fourth place) advance to state. Buford’s Sarah Davis took third place (19:57.3). Flowery Branch’s Hannah Grainger (19:59.1), Loganville’s Alaya Lindquist (20:15.3), and Walnut Grove’s Kaitlin Ivey (20:32.5) all finished in the top six.

REGION 8-A: Wright Allen led Lakeview Academy to fifth place in the Region 8-A championship with a time of 18:06. The Lions will advance to state with their top five finish they had in Athens on Thursday.

Jackie Allen led the Lady Lions to a sixth place spot with a time of 24:43.
