Flowery Branch girls crack top 10 in soccer

Fresh off securing the Region 8-AAAA championship with a 1-0 win over Heritage on April 1, the Flowery Branch girls are in the poll for the first time this season at No. 10 in the latest High School Soccer Coaches Poll, released Sunday. The Lady Falcons (10-6, 8-0) visit Salem at 6 p.m. April 12.

The Gainesville boys soccer team remains fourth in Class AAA. The defending state champion Red Elephants (12-2, 10-0 Area 8-AAA) won at North Hall, 2-0, on March 31, and host to non-region opponent Habersham Central at 7:30 p.m. April 12. The Raiders are ranked seventh in Class AAAA.

Also in Class AAA, both teams from Johnson held position this week. The No. 5 Knights (12-2, 9-1) defeated Walnut Grove, 6-2, and the No. 6 Lady Knights (11-2-1, 9-1) defeated Walnut Grove, 7-1, on March 31 in Oakwood. Johnson visits Monroe Area, beginning with the girls at 5:30 p.m. on April 12.

After defeating Monroe Area, 9-1, on March 25 in Cleveland, the White County girls make their first appearance of 2011, coming in at No. 10. The Lady Warriors (11-1, 6-1) host Stephens County at 5:30 p.m. April 5.

In Class AA, both the Buford boys and girls held steady. The fifth-ranked Wolves (8-4-2, 3-1 Area 6-AA) and the sixth-ranked Lady Wolves (12-2, 4-1) visit Westminster, beginning with the girls at 5:30 p.m. on April 13.

The Union County boys (12-1-1, 5-0 Area 8A-AA) stayed at No. 9, while the Lady Panthers (11-1-1, 4-1) moved down one spot to 10. The Dawson County boys (8-5, 3-2) make their first appearance in the poll at No. 10.
