Last week in the 51st annual Lanierland Tournament, East Hall’s Kymon Woods got on a roll.

On Monday, in the first round of Lanierland, Woods scored 15 points as the Vikings routed Chestatee 77-41.

Two days later in the semifinals against Gainesville, Woods had arguably his best game of the tournament, scoring 15 points with eight rebounds, three assists and two steals, as East Hall won a close one, 78-77.

And then in the final against North Hall on Thursday night at West Hall High, Woods scored 17 points and the Vikings blew away the Trojans, 76-43, to win their 24th Lanierland Championship and first since 2007.

For his efforts, Woods is The Times Athlete of the Week.

The numbers that Woods put up over the four-day stretch are all the more impressive considering he missed his entire junior season with a knee injury. The senior averaged 17 points per game as sophomore and his absence was noticed in 2009.

Now that the 6-foot-5 wing player is back, East Hall has jumped out to a 6-2 record and is ranked fourth in its new home in Class AA.

With four seniors and four juniors on the team, the Vikings should be competitive at the state level now that they have moved down from Class AAA. East Hall was in Class AA until being moved up to AAA before the 2006-2007 season.

The Vikings have a strong point guard in 6-foot Dre Perry, the senior had seven assists in the Lanierland final, and a solid presence in the paint in senior Sterling Bailey.

Bailey, who is 6-foot-6, had 17 rebounds to go along with 10 points in the win over North Hall. Assisting Bailey in the post area has been the defensive presence of Chaz Cheeks, a 6-foot-4 senior.

With Woods and Joshua Hampton (17 points in the final) on the wing, Perry at the point and Bailey and Cheeks down low, East Hall may have the components necessary to get back to the dominance that saw them play in three straight state championship from 2005-2007 and win the title in 2005.

The Vikings will continue their drive toward the state playoffs today, as they participate in the Upward Classic in Spartanburg, S.C.
