Region MVP Caroline Wysocki scored 18 points and Ashley Scott finished with 10 for the Flowery Branch girls in a 50-34 win against Marist to wrap up the Region 8-4A championship on Saturday in Gainesville.

Leading by six after three quarters, the Lady Falcons outscored Marist, 16-5, in the fourth period.

With the win, Flowery Branch will open the Class 4A state playoffs against Pickens on Friday. Game time is still to be determined.

“This means a lot to our program and our school to win a region championship,” Newton-Gonzalez said. “These girls who are seniors now have worked so hard for their entire career to get to this point.”

Despite a slow start, according to Flowery Branch coach Courtney Newton-Gonzalez, it rebounded nicely and put together a nice run early in the second half to build an 11-point cushion.
