Flowery Branch has hired a new boy’s basketball coach in Jay Burney, Flowery Branch athletic director Jimmy Lawler announced in a statement on Tuesday.

Pending board approval, Burney will replace Chezley Watson, who recently resigned after one season as head coach.

Burney is currently the boy’s basketball coach at Boaz High School in Alabama, where he’s compiled a 18-12 record and earned the Area 13 regular season championship.

He began his more than 20-year coaching career at the college level with stints as an assistant coach at Wallace State College in Hanceville, Alabama, and as a head coach at Darton College in Albany, Georgia. Thereafter, high school coaching entered the fold, with Lee High School in Huntsville, Alabama, being the first to call.

Burney’s coaching accomplishments include eight area championships and 11 state playoff appearances. Two of his teams finished as state runner-ups in the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) state basketball finals.
