Georgia State’s D’Marcus Simonds, a Gainesville High graduate, was named Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year for basketball.

Simonds became the second freshman at Georgia State to earn this honor. He averaged 13 points and four rebounds per game.

He was named College Sports Madness National Mid-Major Player of the Week on Jan. 30, and a day later garnered Sun Belt Player of the Week recognition.

Earlier this year he was named tournament MVP of the Cancun Challenge after scoring a career-high 26 points against New Jersey Institute of Technology.

As a senior at Gainesville he led the Red Elephants to the second round of the playoffs. His performance in 2016 earned him Gainesville Times Player of the Year honors.

NORTH GEORGIA 7, ANDERSON 1: Devin Gearhart and Joshua Peterson each tripled for the Nighthawks on Wednesday in Anderson, S.C.

Gearhart led off the game with a triple to center field and came in to score just moments later on a wild pitch. The Nighthawks tacked on another run in the second with a two-out RBI single down the left field line by Kal Dempsey to plate Connor Corbitt from first.

North Georgia would add two more in the top of the third, highlighted by an RBI double to left-field gap by Michael Gouge.

North Georgia improves to 13-4. North Georgia hosts Armstrong State in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday in Dahlonega.
