Thrashers take teenage prospect with No. 8 pick

The Atlanta Thrashers selected center Alex Burmistrov, an 18-year-old prospect from Kazan, Russia, with the eight overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft on Friday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The 5-foot-11, 160-pound Burmistrov was the 11th-ranked North American skater entering the draft after appearing in 62 games last season with the Ontario Hockey League’s Barrie Colts. He had 22 goals and 43 assists for the Colts in the regular season and eight goals and eight assists in 17 postseason games.

Burmistrov also played one season for the Kazan Ak-Bars of the Kontinental Hockey League (Russia).
