High school football preview: Jefferson visits Cairo in Class AAAA quarterfinals

Game notes: This will be the first-ever meeting between both programs. Jefferson is back in the state quarterfinals for the third time in five seasons after ousting West Laurens in a 21-0 shutout at Memorial Stadium last week.

Cairo edged Sandy Creek 10-7 in the second round last week to reach the third round for the first time since 2011.

The Dragons’ only loss of the season occurred against No. 2 Thomson, which ended West Hall’s season in the second round with a 42-14 win last week.

Jefferson is riding a nine-game winning streak, which includes wins over area teams Gainesville and Flowery Branch. Cairo has won 10 straight games.

Who to watch: Jefferson junior running back Colby Wood was held under 100 yards, but scored twice for the Dragons last week.

He has 1,425 rushing yards and 23 total touchdowns to date.

Cairo starting quarterback John Michael Owens has thrown for 2,027 yards with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions for the Syrupmakers.

The Syrupmakers defense snagged four interceptions last week, two from senior D.J. Donaldson.
