Given the red ink on the balance line of the nation’s checkbook, those responsible for governing from Washington, D.C., sure are spending a lot of money. Locally, we’ve had story after story in recent weeks about area governments receiving huge chunks of federal money for one cause or another, or applying for funding because money is available and has to be spent.
