Wednesday’s edition had a long letter from George C. Kaulbach of Cornelia attempting to show climate change is a hoax. I realize you editors need to fill space on the editorial page with something, but must you do it with letters that leave the reading public with the impression that all folks in North Georgia just came in from the turnip patch, or get their data from a recollection of the drought of 1999 in Cornelia?
To provide some specifics to refute Mr. Kaulbach:
• According to the Huffington Post on Dec. 13, the Arctic Report Card, presented by 61 scientists at the American Geophysical Union, states that this year has been the warmest on record in the Arctic since 1900, when records were first kept.
• According to Politico.com, in an article published May 23, the golf course that is owned by Trump International Golf Links in Ireland has appealed to the local government for permission to build a sea wall, claiming that global warming will increase erosion with the rise in the level of the sea water and the wall is necessary to protect the course.
• According to a presentation to the British Ecological Society, the average weight of reindeer on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard has had a 12 percent drop since 1994, due to a change in the climate which has affected how the reindeer gain access to winter forage. This has resulted in a decline in reindeer population.
• In an article posted by Rachel Waldholz of Alaska NPR, on Aug. 27 the largest cruise ship ever completed the Northwest Passage from Seward, Alaska, to New York City. The ship, with 1,600 passengers, made the crossing without incident. Waldholz reported that a decade ago the Northwest Passage could only be reliably navigated by ships with ice-breaking capability. But a warming Arctic has meant ice-free summers.
The evidence supporting climate change is overwhelming. Mr. Kaulbach may want to deny it, but he has a better chance of proving the world is flat.
