Will Powell seek chairman’s post?
Speculation has been rampant in recent weeks that Hall County Commissioner Billy Powell will seek the chairman’s seat in 2016.
Powell is on a fishing trip in the California wilderness, so it will remain speculation for now.
But with former Hall County Board of Education Chairman Richard Higgins throwing his hat in the race this week and former Commissioner Steve Gailey running as well, Powell faces a stiff challenge even before making up his mind.
Current Chairman Richard Mecum has said he does not intend to seek re-election.
Police spokesman’s twins won’t be named for his favorite reporters
Gainesville Police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook, spokesman for the department, added two more to his family’s police force with the arrival of twin babies, Carson and Braxton.
The baby name suggestions of Nick, for The Times’ public safety reporter Nick Watson, and B.J., for WDUN reporter B.J. Williams, were heard but didn’t make the cut.
Gainesville city manager search heating up
Gainesville Mayor Danny Dunagan said officials will begin interviewing candidates to replace departed City Manager Kip Padgett the week of Sept. 13.
Padgett resigned in July to take a similar position in Wake Forest, N.C.
“We’re taking our time,” Dunagan said. “We’re doing it right.”
