WomenSource, a nonprofit organization created to support women’s programs in the community, is celebrating women’s history month with a screening of the film “Iron Jawed Angels” Monday at Brenau University.

“Iron Jawed Angels” tells the story of a group of women who fought for women’s right to vote in the 1910s.

“I think it’s a story a lot of people — men and women — don’t realize took place,” said WomenSource board member Dixie Truelove, who organized the event.

“These women went to prison,” Truelove said. “They really were sure of their ideas and felt strongly that women needed the right to vote.”

Truelove, a founding member of the organization, said she has wanted to plan a screening of “Iron Jawed Angels” since WomenSource got off the ground in 2008.

She said it is important for women to realize the many sacrifices that were made so they could have the right to vote.

“I was shocked when I watched this movie,” Truelove said.

“I couldn’t believe it that these women were so strong.”

Truelove said the movie is especially pertinent for women of voting age leading up to the 2010 election season.

“I think people will walk away with a better understanding of our history and why it’s so important to get out and vote,” Truelove said.

The movie will be screened at Brenau University, a women’s college. Admission is free.
