Woman to be charged in Thursday fatal wreck

A Winder woman will be charged following the Thursday, June 15, fatal wreck on Athens Highway, authorities said.

Jana Lynn York, 38, will be charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and failure to maintain lane. Second-degree vehicular homicide is a misdemeanor charge.

Robert Thomas Brooks Jr., 43, of Comer, was fatally injured in the wreck Thursday afternoon on Athens Highway near Gaines Mill Road.

York was driving a Volkswagen Jetta with Brooks as a passenger southbound on Athens Highway. Georgia State Patrol Cpl. Josh Hedden said the car went off the west shoulder “for an unknown reason.”

The corporal said the car then struck a sign and continued down an embankment.

“(The car) struck a ditch with the front of (the) vehicle and overturned onto the passenger side,” Hedden wrote in an email.

York was seriously injured and transferred to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Hospital officials said Friday afternoon she was in fair condition and had been transferred from the intensive care unit to a regular floor.
