A new building in downtown Flowery Branch featuring a craft beer store and eventually a cigar lounge could open in October.
“I can’t wait. I’m getting so excited,” said Karen Ching, owner of the building at Main and Mitchell streets. “This has been a long haul for me.”
Some work remains, such as landscaping and touch-up painting inside, she said Wednesday, Sept.5.
“We’re going to completely finish it before we open anything up,” she said.
This will be the second venture on Main Street for Beer Me owner Robert Sabbath. He was co-owner of the former Growlers on Main at 5509 Main St.
In an earlier interview, he said the city-owned spot near the Historic Train Depot was a “good location, but it’s going to be nice to have a spot that was designed by us.”
Also planned are the offices of Home Care Matters, a caregiver service. The company is now upstairs at Liberty Candy Co., a building Ching owns on Main and Church streets.
“They need more space,” Ching said. “They also need (handicapped) accessibility. This will give direct access into their office.”
Also planned is Churchill Cigar Lounge, a place where patrons can puff cigars, order alcoholic beverages and eat snack meats and cheeses.
“They need a couple of months (before opening),” Ching said. “They’re building a huge, glass humidor inside the (store). They’re getting bids from contractors right now.”
A humidor is a box or room used for storing cigars, cigarettes or pipe tobacco.
Ching’s project began four years ago when she bought the property — and the 121-year-old house that stood on it. At the time, she said she would have liked to restore the building, as she did with the century-old Liberty Candy building, but “termites had eaten half the floor on the first floor.”
She ended up tearing down the building, then going through the process of putting up a new one in its place. Next steps included going before the city’s Historic Preservation Commission, as the property is in a historic district.
An original tenant in the new building was Peyton’s Pie Co., a pizzeria owned by Nicholas St. Clair, owner and chef at Antebellum restaurant, also off Main Street.
He backed out earlier this year.
“I just had a newborn, so we’ve got three babies … and keeping up Antebellum takes a lot of time and dedication,” St. Clair said in a May interview.
