Charlotte Atkins, publisher of The Times media group, will be leaving Gainesville to take on a new position within Morris Multimedia. She has been named publisher of Morris Caribbean Publications and will be transferring to the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The Caribbean company publishes premium destination magazines on St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix as well as visitors and cruise passenger guides. In edition to taking the helm of the magazines, Atkins is being charged with creating a digital and publication strategy for the whole Caribbean.
“Charlotte is a highly talented and wonderful person, and we are thrilled that she is heading up our Caribbean operations,’’ said Charles Hill Morris Jr., group publisher of the North Georgia newspaper group, which includes The Times and the Caribbean. “She will absolutely be successful in taking the organization to the next level, with an eye toward digital expansion and growth.”
Atkins joined The Times as publisher in 2014. In her almost two years in the position, she has added new products and events with an eye toward more community engagement and collaboration and more in-depth journalism. Moxie, Discover North Georgia and Brides & Grooms magazines were among the new products.
The North Georgia Women’s Expo, in partnership with Brenau University, and the North Georgia Battle of the Bands, in partnership with Lanier Islands, were community events created by Atkins.
The Times’ digital services agency, Advanced Media Solutions, also was launched during her tenure.
Atkins has served on the boards of the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Hall County, Habitat for Humanity of Hall County and Gainesville-Hall ’96, as well as on numerous community initiative committees. She attends Grace Episcopal Church.
“I have so enjoyed my time here in the Gainesville-Hall County area,” Atkins said. “This is such an engaged, caring community with an exceptional quality of life and strong leadership. The partnerships and synergy that have been created with The Times will continue. And I leave here with a full heart and many many dear friends. It has truly been an honor and privilege to serve as publisher of The Times.”
As an avid scuba diver, sailor, kayaker and outdoors woman, Atkins says the new opportunity suits her to a tee. Her last day as The Times publisher will be Aug. 5 and she starts at Morris Caribbean Publications Aug. 8.
