Gainesville City Council is scheduled to consider annexing a 1-acre site off Atlanta Highway today for a new Family Dollar store across the street from a current one.

Grant Gunter, an engineer with FD Group LLC, represented the company at the Planning and Appeals Board hearing in August. The new store would go in at 420 Atlanta Highway on the west side of the highway and south of Pearl Nix Parkway.

“The Family Dollar model is going to free-standing rather than locating in shopping centers,” Gunter said after the meeting.

The City Council is also expected to consider a Federal Transit Administration grant that would go toward maintaining equipment and buses for Hall Area Transit, which is housed under the Gainesville-Hall Community Service Center.

Hall County hires new deputy tax commissioner

Hall County Tax Commissioner Darla Eden appointed Randall Williams as chief deputy tax commissioner in August. He previously held this position in Rockdale County for eight years, a news release said.

“The fact that Randy has prior experience, is well-known in the industry and has many friends in local governments across Georgia will be an extreme benefit to Hall County Government and Hall County taxpayers,” Eden said in the news release.

Williams’ duties are expected to include serving as operations manager for Eden, and he can serve in her absence. He will also head the Motor Vehicle and Property Tax division and ensure all property taxes are collected accurately and timely.

City groups schedule, reschedule meetings

The Main Street Gainesville meeting scheduled for today was rescheduled to Sept. 10. The meeting will be held in the Communications and Tourism Board Room at 117 Jesse Jewell Parkway, Gainesville.

A called meeting for the Retirement Plan A Board is expected to be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Gainesville Administration Building at 300 Henry Ward Way, Gainesville. Attendees will meet in the Bill Williams Conference Room on the third floor.
