The first big holiday weekend of the summer season at Lake Lanier produced the first tragedy when a teenager drowned Saturday at Burton Mill Park in South Hall County.

The 17-year-old male tried to swim across a cove and went under, according to David Kimbrell, Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Management for Hall County.

After receiving the call around 5:20 p.m., Hall County Fire marine rescue unit arrived and began an underwater search for the victim. He was found during a second sweep of the area.

Crews attempted to revive the teen on the scene but were unsuccessful.

The incident was the only one reported on Lake Lanier by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to start the holiday weekend.

Statewide, the DNR reported two drownings, and one fatal boating accident. There were four boating incidents overall and eight cases of boating under the influence.
