A Johnson High School student suffered a broken ankle when she was hit by a pickup truck while boarding a school bus Monday morning.

But Jewel Armour, executive director of operations and transportation for the Hall County school system, said the bus driver’s quick actions prevented a more serious accident.

Theo Coker had deployed a flashing stop sign when he stopped to pick up 16-year-old Yen Bui at about 7:30 a.m. off the two-lane Barrett Road at U.S. 129 in East Hall.

Noticing a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction that he believed would be unable to stop in time, Coker followed safety procedures by blowing his bus horn to alert the student and the motorist, school officials said.

Bui was struck a "glancing blow" by the vehicle, officials said.

The driver of the 2003 Toyota Tacoma was Elizabeth Bowers, 27, of Gainesville, said Maj. Jeff Strickland of the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.

Bui was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

No other students were on the bus.

"No charges have been filed at this time, and it is still under investigation," Strickland said.
