A car reported stolen from a Forsyth County driveway was found in Lake Lanier later that same day, according to Lumpkin County Sheriff Office investigator Darren Martin.

The 2007 Chevrolet HHR was found by boaters about 2 feet underwater, 65 feet offshore from a boat ramp at Lumpkin County Park on Monday.

"When they first saw it, they thought it was a boat that had capsized," Martin said. "As they got closer, they realized it was much bigger."

First responders got into the water and checked that no one was in the vehicle.

The Forsyth County Dive Team later did a more extensive search and found no bodies, Martin said.

Martin also said they haven't found any witnesses, but investigators have concluded it was left there on Monday, the same day it was found.

A Forsyth County resident also reported the vehicle stolen on Monday.

He told investigators the car was in his driveway when he went to sleep at 11 p.m. on Sunday. When he woke up the next morning, the car was gone, according to Forsyth County Sheriff's Office officials.

A wrecker was eventually able to remove the vehicle from the lake.

Martin said any charges will likely come from Forsyth County once officials conclude their investigation into the theft.
