Georgia’s open burning ban will be lifted starting today.

From Oct. 1 through April 30, the Gainesville Fire Department allows residential burn permits to be issued.

Residents can obtain a burn permit by calling 770-534-3612. Fire personnel will come inspect your site and issue the permit, according to Division Chief Keith Smith.

Other rules that must be observed to obtain a permit:

A garden hose or method of extinguishment must be present.

Only leaves, grass or small tree limbs can be burned.

The burn site must be 50 feet from structures or property lines.

A competent adult must attend the fire at all times.

The fire must be out completely before dark.

Those with questions can call the Gainesville Fire Department at 770-534-3612.
