Sheriff: Women-led team responsible for at least 10 trailer thefts

A suspected trailer theft ring controlled by multiple Jefferson women has been broken up, according to authorities.

Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum said Thursday, Aug. 1, the department had “put a stop to a major theft ring controlled by several females.”

“These subjects are responsible for 10 or more trailer thefts in city of Commerce, city of Jefferson and multiple others in Madison County. They are also responsible for the theft of several four-wheelers and other tools,” Mangum said.

Four trailers, a four-wheeler, a handgun and multiple tools have been recovered.

Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has charged Yvonne Alayne Massey, 37, and Heather Elaine Karhoff, 41, both of Jefferson, with felony theft by taking. Massey has four counts from Jackson County, while Karhoff has three.

Massey was arrested July 15, while Karhoff was apprehended July 23.

The police departments in Jefferson and Commerce charged both women with one count of felony theft by taking each.

Outside of charges in Madison County, Massey is facing two counts of misdemeanor theft by taking and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Karhoff was also charged with felony theft by receiving and two misdemeanor counts of theft by taking.

Two more people were charged and arrested Aug. 1: Angela and Harley Jones, both 26 and of Jefferson.

Harley and Angela Jones were charged with felony theft by receiving in Jackson County and have a pending theft by deception charge in Athens-Clarke County.
