A Gainesville man is accused of stealing clothes and a child Monday to “avoid police capture” after a traffic stop, according to authorities.

Luis Angel Contreras, 26, is charged with first-degree burglary and kidnapping. He was booked Tuesday in to the Hall County Jail, where he remains.

According to an Oakwood Police report, an officer attempted to stop a car for speeding before 4 p.m. Monday in the area of Flat Creek Road.

“Mr. Contreras was a passenger in the vehicle and fled on foot,” according to the report.

Oakwood Police Chief Randall Moon said Contreras went to a house and knocked on the door, asking for a change of clothes. The warrant accused Contreras of entering the home “without authority with intent to commit a theft and did take clothing.”

Moon said Contreras made a boy, who the chief believed to be a teenager, at the residence leave with him, as the warrant said Contreras allegedly “held him against his will in order to avoid police capture.”

Moon said Contreras was found shortly thereafter in the area of Reed Circle off Oakwood Road.
