Timothy Glenn, 42, of Summerville has been identified as the man struck and killed by a train while he walked on railroad tracks in Gainesville.

Glenn was hit by a southbound train just south of the Queen City Parkway bridge, according to Jeff Strickland, Hall County Sheriff's Office chief deputy.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the call just before 9 p.m.

Glenn, who was a prisoner at Phillips State Prison in Buford, was participating in a work release program. When he finished working, he was expected to return to the prison.

However, while walking on the tracks toward his job at Mar Jac Poultry, Strickland said Glenn saw the train coming.

Glenn reportedly attempted to avoid the train by moving to a different set of tracks but was unaware the train had also switched.

The train sounded its horn, but it appears Glenn never looked back again.

The incident remains under investigation by the Hall County Sheriff's Office, Criminal Investigations Division.
