A Texas woman killed in downtown Helen late Saturday has been identified.

May Araim, 68, of Houston was fatally shot when Glenn Patrick Lampien, 53, of Jasper, accidentally fired his handgun.

Helen police plan to charge Lampien with involuntary manslaughter, according a news release from the department.

Officers responded to 8660 N. Main St. at 10:41 p.m. to reports of a shot fired in the area.

Upon arrival, they found a man sitting on a bench with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the hand, police said.

He also had a small-caliber handgun.

Officers then learned about a woman across Main Street who had been injured. As they sought to help her, they found Araim had been shot in the side.

“First aid was attempted by bystanders prior to emergency personnel arriving,” states the news release.

Araim was pronounced dead on the scene, and the man was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

“It was determined that the male had accidentally discharged the weapon into his hand, the bullet then traveled across Main Street, striking the female victim,” police said.

Helen police later contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for help in the case. All evidence was turned over to the GBI, police said.
