Oakwood gives final approval to annexation

Oakwood City Council gave its final OK Monday to annexation of a site for a proposed child care center on Winder Highway (Ga. 53).

The three-acre site will feature a Discovery Point center.

The council had been concerned that distance requirements from the center, which would feature a preschool, would hamper development of alcohol-pouring restaurants at the Kroger shopping center near completion across the street.

Oakwood City Manager Stan Brown said that the measurement of the distance between the center and outparcels at the shopping center involved reaching the center by legal ways, or by the nearest crosswalk across the developing four-lane road, which will be split by a median.

The outparcels "are well beyond the distance requirements," Brown said.
