Numerous candidates putting names in for Nov. 3 city elections
Council seats open in Clermont, Flowery Branch, Gainesville, Gillsville, Lula and Oakwood

A number of potential candidates threw their name in the ring Monday for openings on city councils throughout Hall County and on the Gainesville school board.

Elections are set for Nov. 3 in Clermont, Flowery Branch, Gainesville, Gillsville, Lula and Oakwood.

Retired social worker Barbara Brooks and Andre Cheek, outreach unit program coordinator with the Department of Juvenile Justice, filed papers to qualify for the Gainesville City Council Ward 3 seat being vacated by Myrtle Figueras.

Gainesville business owner Zack Thompson and Emory Turner, who retired from manufacturing and serves on numerous boards, both filed to qualify for the Ward 2 seat on the Gainesville City Council, which is being vacated by Bob Hamrick.

Post 5 incumbent Ruth Bruner also filed.

For Gainesville school board District 5, business owner and Gainesville High graduate Mike Mauldin filed along with incumbent Sammy Smith.

Oakwood also has newcomers filing papers to qualify for City Council posts: Pat Jones, Post 2; Dwight Wood, Post 4; and Sheri Millwood, Post 5.

For Flowery Branch Town Council, Post 2 incumbent Mary Jones and Post 1 incumbent Chris Mundy filed papers to qualify.

In Lula, District 4 incumbent Garnett Smith and District 1 incumbent Larry Shuler have filed.
