The body of a man previously reported missing was found in a vehicle Wednesday afternoon near Interstate 985 in Buford.
Lorenzo Alcaras-Cortez, 30, died after he and his 1999 Ford Expedition traveled down an embankment on the northbound side of Interstate 985 between Interstate 85 and Buford Drive.
Gwinnett County Cpl. Michele Pihera said the vehicle “struck several trees before coming to a final stop.” Alcaras-Cortez died as a result of his injuries.
A driver from Willard Wrecker Service saw Alcaras-Cortez’s vehicle while driving on the highway around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Pihera said.
“The driver exited the interstate and eventually came back to the incident scene to further investigate,” Pihera wrote in an email. “Upon seeing the deceased male, the driver called police.”
Alcaras-Cortez was wearing a seatbelt, and investigators believe the crash only involved Alcaras-Cortez’s vehicle, the corporal said.
The man’s family filed a missing person report over the weekend.
The officer originally believed there were two people inside the vehicle, but it was later determined to be only one deceased person inside.
