Man charged in Craigslist plot to drug, harm wife
Arrest followed undercover investigation
Timothy Wayne Garrett

A Gainesville man is accused of trying to buy a date rape drug through Craigslist as part of a sexual assault scheme targeting his wife.

Hall County authorities allege Timothy Wayne Garrett, 50, used the classified advertisements website to try to find someone who would sell him gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid, a central nervous system depressant, so he could drug his wife, then join the stranger or strangers in sexually assaulting her, said Lt. Scott Ware of the Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad.

Garrett was arrested Friday on Shallowford Road. He is in the Hall County Jail on charges of attempted rape and attempted felony possession of GHB with the intent

to distribute.

His arrest by MANS agents and Hall County Sheriff’s Office investigators and deputies followed an undercover investigation that began about two weeks ago, after Garrett had placed the ad on Craigslist, Ware said.

Garrett arranged to meet undercover agents at a location where they would complete the drug transaction. They met as planned, with Garrett paying $80 “for a substance he believed to be GHB,” he said.

One of the two undercover agents was posing as one of the individuals Garrett “thought would sexually assault his wife after he had drugged her,” Ware said.

Garrett then was arrested without incident after “confirming his intentions” with agents.
