A young Gainesville woman facing cancer just might have found her cure.
Kelsey Trusty Bishop, 23, underwent a bone marrow transplant Thursday after a summer spent searching for a donor match after acute myeloid leukemia was detected following a period of remission.
“We just got back from there and she’s resting,” said Bishop’s mother-in-law, Nan Bishop. “She has a real bad headache, but other than that she’s resting and doing good.”
Nan Bishop was attending Thursday’s 5K Warm-Up Lap, a prelude to the Sept. 28 Kelsey’s Cure 5K at Riverside Military Academy, 2001 Riverside Drive, Gainesville. Thursday’s “warm-up” at Locos Grill & Pub in Gainesville involved a silent auction, and 10 percent of all of Locos meals sold was being donated to the recently formed group Kelsey’s Cure.
“We don’t have a monetary goal,” said Kelly Garmon with the group. “We just want to have a big crowd. The community has rallied like I’ve never seen before. We’re just really proud.”
Also at Thursday’s event was former Atlanta Braves player John Rocker, who was selling and signing his book “Scars and Strikes.” He was donating portions of his book sales to Kelsey’s Cure.
“I don’t know Kelsey but I do know a little bit about her story,” Rocker said. “It’s just always important for me to give back, especially to young ones who are just starting out.”
Bishop will be at Emory University Hospital for the next three or four weeks. She will then move to the Hope Lodge, a housing facility for cancer patients who live 50 miles or more from their treatment center. Nan Bishop said her daughter-in-law would remain there through the holidays, until the end of January.
“The next 10 to 14 days will be the critical time to see if the cells did what they’re supposed to do,” she said, speaking about the bone marrow transplant.
The only information available about the donor is that he’s a 50-year-old man.
“The entire community, like I’ve never seen, has come out,” said Garmon. “(Kelsey’s) a really special girl.”
