The Hall County Sheriff’s Office is training its officers to administer a medication that reverse the effects of opiate drug overdoses. The pilot program, a partnership with the Medical Association of Georgia Foundation, will equip patrol officers, school resource officers and first responders with naloxone, which can be administered through the nose or via injection. Naloxone has proven extremely effective in preventing overdose deaths from heroin and prescription painkillers — so much so health care advisers recommend officers use the medication even if it’s expired, and even if they are not sure what has caused an individual to overdose.
