A Lumpkin County man made his request for a “large meat pizza” for his last meal before he is set to be executed Wednesday, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.
Steven Frederick Spears is set for execution at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson.
Spears was convicted in 2007 of strangling ex-girlfriend Sherri Holland six years earlier. If executed Wednesday, he would be the eighth Georgia inmate to die by lethal injection this year.
According to court documents, Spears reportedly came up with multiple plans to kill Holland, including bludgeoning, electrocution and shooting.
He was convicted of breaking into her home on Aug. 25, 2001, and choking her.
Spears will have a clemency hearing in Atlanta on Tuesday.
According to the department of corrections, 66 men and one woman have been executed in Georgia since 1976. There are 60 men under a death sentence in the state.
