Jackson EMC recovers $24.5K after falling victim to ‘sophisticated’ email scam

Authorities in Jackson County and Texas are investigating a scam perpetrated against Jackson EMC last month over email. The company was able to recover the $24,500 it lost through insurance.

Jackson EMC spokeswoman April Sorrow said it happened in an exchange between the company and a marketing partner. The business received an email about how to make a payment.

“It turned out that email was actually a fraudulent email. It was incredibly sophisticated and a very calculated crime, in that they knew exactly who to pretend to be in that email even down to the amount of money to share,” Sorrow said.

Jackson County authorities are working the case, as well as investigators in Texas, where the money was sent.
