A Jackson County School System assistant superintendent has been named the new principal of Chicopee Woods Elementary School.
Jamie Hitzges, assistant superintendent of finance and operations in Jackson County since 2012, was selected by the Hall County school board meeting Monday night. He replaces Lindsey Chatham, who resigned to take a position in the Clarke County School District closer to her home.
While he has served five years in a central office job, Hitzges said returning to a local school is follows his belief that “you should always pursue your passion.”
“Finding happiness and calling means more,” he said. “I definitely see this as a calling.”
Hitzges will not be the only Hall County principal in his family. His wife, Laurie, is currently the principal of the middle school at World Language Academy.
“She has definitely enjoyed her time in Hall County,” he said of his wife.
In his job in Jackson County, Hitzges was responsible for the budgeting and finance office, as well as transportation, food service, technology and maintenance and facilities for a district that has about 1,000 employees and a $66 million budget. Jackson County has approximately 7,600 students in its 11 schools.
“I think I had done about as much as I could do in Jackson County,” Hitzges said.
Hall County Schools Superintendent Will Schofield called Hitzges “a man of character.”
“He has an excellent background,” Schofield said. “I’m looking forward to getting Jamie on board, and we wish Lindsey nothing but the best in Clarke County. We’ve talked to him over the last several years and knew that when the right position came along, we wanted to get him on board, and this was the right position at the right time.”
