Hall County jailer remains hospitalized at Northeast Georgia Medical Center with several broken facial bones after being assaulted by an inmate Saturday morning at the jail, according to a sheriff’s office spokesman.

The inmate, Devonte Hammond, 24, of Atlanta reportedly became violent around 11 a.m. Saturday while jailer Aaron Nguyen was escorting him to a disciplinary section of the jail, according to Col. Jeff Strickland.

Earlier Saturday, Hammond reportedly exposed himself to a nurse who was giving medicine to other inmates. When the jailer attempted to escort Hammond to a disciplinary cell, the inmate became violent and began beating Nguyen in the face.

Nguyen, 24, of Jefferson has been with the sheriff’s office for two years.

Hammond has been charged with aggravated battery on a peace officer, felony obstruction and indecent exposure. He was being held in jail on charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault, obstruction and possession of cocaine.
